New Year's Eve Mafia Night: A Party Host's Guide

Use roles that new guests can understand after a two-minute explanation. The setup-by-player-count guide has complete tables; these three sets are easy to host at a party:

• 7 players: 2 Mafia, 1 Sheriff, 4 Citizens.
• 8 players: 2 Mafia, 1 Sheriff, 1 Doctor, 4 Citizens.
• 10 players: 2 Mafia, 1 Don, 1 Sheriff, 1 Doctor, 5 Citizens.

If most guests are playing for the first time, use the 7-player set and reveal roles when players leave the game. If the table already knows Mafia, add the Don or replace one Citizen with a Lover. Do not add several unfamiliar roles merely because the party is special.

Do not begin a full game less than an hour before the countdown. A good evening has a firm pause rather than a rushed final vote:

If a game runs long, write down the alive players, round number, and last night actions before pausing. Better still, leave the game open on the host's phone so the table can resume without reconstructing the state.

Keep the mechanics recognizable and theme the presentation:

• Call the daytime meeting the town assembly and use a small bell to open nominations.
• Give the Game Master a festive jacket, sash, or paper crown so guests know who controls the pace.
• Use place cards for player names; they help a group whose guests do not all know one another.
• Ask eliminated players to write one playful prediction for the new year, then read the predictions after the role reveal.
• Award paper titles such as “Best Bluff,” “Sharpest Sheriff,” and “Most Convincing Citizen.”

Props should never reveal roles. Do not hand the Don a special hat or ask the Doctor to bring a medical costume. Secret assignment is what makes the game work.

Explain the goal before individual abilities: Mafia wants to reach parity with the town; Citizens want to identify and remove every Mafia member. Then explain the night order only to the Game Master. Each player needs to know their own role, not memorize every interaction.

Seat confident players apart so newcomers have space to speak. During the first day, ask everyone for one short observation in seating order before opening free discussion. Use a visible three-to-five-minute timer, and ask guests to nominate one person at a time.

Choose one quiet room and close it to pass-through traffic during the night. Move music speakers away from the circle, silence notifications, and ask guests to refill glasses between rounds rather than during secret actions.

Late arrivals should join the next game. Spectators may watch the daytime discussion, but they should step away during the night and never react to a role reveal. If the party includes children or guests who prefer not to bluff, offer them the Game Master assistant role: keeping time, ringing the morning bell, or handing out awards.
